On the murder of George Tiller
I want to express my horror at the crime that was committed today, and my condolences to the family of George Tiller. Were I in any position to, I would help the authorities apprehend and convict his killer.
I’ll have more tomorrow, but I don’t think this is the appropriate time.

Its shocking. I woke up (yes, I slept in today) to a text from a pro-choice friend reading “Your friends in Kansas killed Tiller, happy now?” How do you respond to that? I mean, I did…I sent back “I’m saddened that you have left logic out of your accusation. When did I ever show support for murder?” She apologized later in the day after we talked, and I told her I was saddened by Tiller’s killing.
Sadly, as Obama’s election led to an increase in hateful words from pro-lifers, the murder of Tiller is already showing to increase hateful comments from pro-choicers.

Most of my pro-choice friends are suggesting responding to this murder with donations to Planned Parenthood. I can’t get on board with that, obviously… but I want to find a positive way for sane, nonviolent pro-life people to respond. Right now, I’m thinking – perhaps a donation to Dr. Teller’s church? I’d be open to ideas.

Catherine:
I’ll be posting about that tonight. I think it’s important for pro-lifers to do more than just issue our statements condemning the killing, although we do need to do that.

How about donations to a group that advocates handgun control?
How did someone like the alleged perpetrator, Scott Roeder, someone with a known violent ideology, someone convicted for carrying bomb materials around–how did *he* get his hands on a handgun?
I’m willing to bet it was via the same unmonitored supply chains and/or lack of background checks that lead to so much gun violence in my neighborhood..we had a couple drivebys the other week…And Tiller is one more life robbed by gun violence in America this year…

I don’t think that pro-choicers should be the only ones holding a vigil. But I also doubt that I’d get a lot of support for it from area pro-lifers. But an anti-violence vigil would be a moving expression of solidarity. If only we all lived in the same town!
